Introduction

To download a Monzo Bank statement as a CSV format, you will have to use the Monzo App.

At the time of writing there are limitations of getting your bank statement as CSV from the website or other means.

In this post, I will go over how to get your statement as CSV on the Monzo app.

If you end up with a bunch of PDF statements, I have listed 3 ways we can convert these PDF files into CSV format.

About Monzo Bank

If you are outside of the UK, you may never heard of Monzo Bank. Its a bank thats established in 2015 in the UK and known for digital-only and mobile-first. They offering services primarily through an app without physical branches. With features like real-time spending notifications, budgeting tools, and overseas fee-free spending, Monzo gained swift popularity, especially among younger users.

Downloading CSV from the app

The easiest way to get your bank statement as CSV is downloading it from the Monzo app.

To do this just open up the app and follow the below steps:

  1. Click on the Home icon in the navigation bar.
  2. Press the Manage option next to your transaction history.
  3. Choose Bank statements.
  4. Pick your desired date range.
  5. Select your preferred file format (PDF, CSV, QIF).

Extract data from Monzo Bank PDF statements to CSV

Now the problem with downloading CSV files is that it only goes up to a certain point. There are limits if you want to get years of previous data.

If you want all statements you will have to contact: bank-statements@monzo.com.

When you end up with PDF bank statements, there are ways to extract the data into CSV.

Alternative 1: Convert the Monzo PDF bank statement to CSV using PdfDodo

One option is to use PdfDodo to convert your PDF bank statements to CSV format.

To do this we go through the following steps:

Step 1: Get an account with PdfDodo

Step 2: Go to the home page and click “Upload Document”

Step 3: After the document has uploaded - click “Start Analysis”. This will usually take a few seconds.

Step 4: Click on the uploaded document link to see the results.

After PdfDodo has completed analysis, it will list out all the data that it thinks is in a table format.

Step 5: Find the table that you are interested in and hit “CSV”

Advantages

  • Free tool for effortless PDF to Excel and CSV conversions.
  • Supports both scanned PDF bank statements and those directly from banks.
  • Facilitates batch conversion of bank statements.
  • Ensures outstanding precision (99%) with the aid of OCR and AI tech, bolstered by an additional data cleansing step.
  • Compatible with encrypted and password-secured PDF statements.
  • Upholds GDPR standards with SSL security and multiple encryption layers, even for free users.

Alternative 2: Use Microsoft Word

If you’d rather avoid using an online app, Microsoft Word offers an alternative. Starting with Word 2013, it provides the capability to import and convert PDFs to Word format.

You can utilize the converted Word document as an intermediary stage, then transfer the data to Excel via copy/paste. Subsequently, you can save the file as a CSV.

(Phew thats a lot of steps)

  1. Launch Microsoft Word.
  2. Go to ‘File’ -> ‘Open’, select the PDF file for conversion.
  3. Word converts the PDF to an editable document, duration varies with file size and complexity.
  4. Post-conversion, edit the content in Word as required.
  5. Conversion quality may fluctuate with complex PDFs, some formatting adjustments might be necessary.
  6. Select, copy and paste the desired data into an CSV spreadsheet.
  7. Some formatting readjustments may be required as the original formatting might not be perfectly retained.

Simpler PDFs work best with this method; for complex files, consider using a dedicated PDF to CSV converter or OCR software. This method might struggle with scanned PDFs, as conversion accuracy may be compromised.

Limitations

  • Do I really need to say more? It works with simple text based PDFs and not scanned PDFs
  • Data can contain random characters that are unicode so be careful when you are copying and pasting to Excel. I would usually copy this and paste it into notepad first. This way we can see the dodgy unicode characters (if any).
  • If Microsoft Word cannot covert, it usually gives you a image instead. So in this case, you will have to enter the data manually yourself!

Alternative 3: Use Adobe Pro

  • Step 1: Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat - Launch Adobe Acrobat and open the PDF file you wish to convert.
  • Step 2. Export the PDF - Navigate to File in the top-left corner, then select Export To from the dropdown menu.
  • Step 3. Choose Spreadsheet Option - From the sub-menu of the export options, select Spreadsheet and then choose Microsoft Excel Workbook. Note: Adobe Acrobat doesn’t provide a direct “export to CSV” option, so we first convert to Excel.
  • Step 4. Save the File - Choose a location on your computer to save the Excel file and click Save.
  • Step 5. Open the Excel File - After the conversion is completed, open the resulting Excel file in Microsoft Excel.
  • Step 6. Save the File as CSV - In Excel, go to File -> Save As.

Choose the location where you want to save your CSV file. From the “Save as type” dropdown, select CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv) and then click Save.

Now, you should have your PDF content in a CSV format.

Limitations:

  • I found that the accuracy of this good for some instances, but can be hit and miss.
  • You will have to pay for Adobe Pro - which can be quite steep.

Summary

Overall, I found the Monzo bank statements are easy to download as CSV if you use the Monzo App.

If you somehow need to extract data from the PDF bank statement to CSV, we can use PdfDodo to extract the data efficiently.

It works with scanned and text PDFs and has a free option!
